Without yet approving the health reform project in Congress, it was learned that there are already health promoting entities interested in switching to the preventive health model proposed by the Government of Gustavo Petro.

According to information revealed by Blu Radio, the first private EPS that would become a life and health manager would be Sura. The information was presented by the director of Adres, Félix León Martínez, who assured that this entity has already had approaches with the Ministry of Health to make the transition to the new health model.

President Petro had already announced that a private EPS was interested in applying the new care model, but did not provide further details regarding which one and when. For his part, Minister Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo also hinted at it in his interventions in the sessions of the seventh commission of the Senate.

However, Martínez stated on the radio station that “Sura has made approaches to the Ministry to seek to accelerate the transition from EPS to manager and stop assuming the financial risk (…) Sura has made these advances with the Ministry, I do not I have participated in those meetings, they have been held with the Ministry because it is interested in accelerating the transition.”

EL COLOMBIANO tried to contact the EPS Sura to find out their position on the information, but for now there has been no response.

The preventive health model that the EPS Sura would adopt involves detecting cases more quickly in the territories and identifying populations prone to diseases to obtain timely forecasts. That plan, according to experts, still has doubts regarding financing and the impact on the care of other health needs.

Enrique Peñaloza, from the Institute of Public Health of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, explained that the model prioritizes preventive actions over curative ones, following a document prepared during Carolina Corcho’s mandate in the Ministry of Health.

This involves intervening in risk situations before diseases fully develop, both on a collective and individual level.

This model would have challenges in terms of financing. One of them is that resources would have to be injected directly from the State to finance the expansion of health centers and brigades throughout the country.

Economic experts highlighted that the current financing through the UPC is insufficient to cover all the required activities, which raises the concern of not defunding other areas of health.
