According to information obtained by Radio-Canada, four private clinics in Quebec and the Montreal region will be authorized for the first time to hospitalize patients overnight.

Until now, only patients who could return home a few hours later were accepted in specialized medical centers (CMS).

As Daniel Lapointe, anesthesiologist and owner of Clinique Opéra MD, explains,at 30% of patients are eligible for day surgery, but if we include patients who could be hospitalized for a day, we jump to 60%, 70%”,”text”:”currently, for a knee prosthesis, 15 to 30% of patients are eligible for day surgery, but if we include patients who could be hospitalized for a day, we go up to 60% , 70%”}}”>currently, for a knee prosthesis, 15 to 30% of patients are eligible for day surgery, but if we include patients who could be hospitalized for a day, we go up to 60%, 70%.

The latter cites in particular patients with sleep apnea, who suffer from diabetes that can be unbalanced by surgery. They might need supervision for a first night.

The Quebec clinic is one of four private centers requested by the ministry, along with Chirurgie DIX30, Rockland MD and Clinique Chirurgique de Laval.

At the Ministry of Health, a spokesperson confirms in writing that the project is currently in development to start as soon as possible […] this summer.

« These pilot projects will allow CMS to perform more complex surgeries that require short-stay hospitalization after surgery. Analysis of current waiting lists shows that many users who have been waiting for an intervention for more than a year could benefit from such an initiative. »

Eventually, patients could be hospitalized in private for up to 72 hours.

In Dr. Lapointe’s opinion, it is prudent to go step by step. We’re talking about heavier surgeries and sicker patients, so starting with 24 hours, one step at a time, I think is the right thing to dohe said.

60,000 private surgeries per year

The volume of surgeries entrusted to the private sector has grown since the start of the pandemic.

As Minister Dubé’s team pointed out during the credit study, around 60,000 surgeries per year have been outsourced to the private sector since the pandemic. Especially in orthopedics and ophthalmology.

This represents approximately 15% of the total volume of surgeries.

This week, the Minister unveiled with medical specialists a plan to reduce by December 2024 the list of patients who have been waiting for surgery for more than a year to 2,500 from the current 17,250.

A similar promise was made in June 2021, when the list was 16,500 patients.

In total, some 158,000 people are waiting for surgery, a relatively stable number for the past year and a half. It was 115,000 before the pandemic.
