Books – Ahmed Gomaa:

Ain Shams Specialized Hospital conducted the first lung transplant of its kind in Egypt, following several months of preparation, in the presence of a medical team specialized in the field of surgery and lung transplantation.

Three informed medical sources said, in exclusive statements to Masrawy, that the organ transplantation operation was carried out last Thursday, for a 28-year-old girl who suffered during the last period from respiratory failure and required a lung transplant, as her two brothers donated to her.

And one of the medical sources stated that the patient is still in intensive care until now with a respirator, and it is expected that she will remain in this condition for regarding two weeks, until she is assured of the efficiency of the new lung.

He added, “The new lung has not functioned so far, and the treatment protocol is to keep following up on the condition by pumping oxygen through the blood and then returning it once more, and the patient remains in care from two to three weeks and on a ventilator for 10 days.”

He pointed out that “my two brothers, who donated part of their lungs, left the intensive care unit to a regular room to follow up on their health condition, which is stable and reassuring.”

He pointed out that during the past months, the case was monitored inside the preparatory clinic for lung transplantation, equipped in accordance with medical protocols, and ensured the safety of donors following conducting many medical examinations.

The source revealed that the Japanese lung transplant expert, Hiroshi Dat, was present during the past few days to discuss a number of cases of respiratory failure that require a lung transplant from a living donor, and he also followed up on the first lung transplant.
