The reintegration of prisoners constitutes a real pillar of the action of the Prison and Hospital for Jesus Christ association, in favor of the penitentiary establishments of Gabon and that of Port-Gentil in particular. To this end, it launched a six-month literacy program for inmates of the central prison of the oil city. On Wednesdays and Saturday mornings for 1 hour, they benefit from free lessons provided voluntarily in order to master reading signs, shapes, vowels and the alphabet.

“It was regarding laying the foundations on the symbols. It’s symbols in French and mathematics that I tried to make them understand, so that they can form words. said Cosette Nfono Alloghe, volunteer teacher.

Nearly 20% of inmates at Port-Gentil central prison are illiterate. These literacy lessons aim for them to apply every vowel, every letter in a given word. These literacy courses are more than a right for prisoners because the acquisition of new knowledge and skills makes the prisoner a new person useful to society.

“The goal is for them to be able to form syllables, words and texts themselves. But let them also manage to correct themselves. There are some who have told me that they have never held a pen or pencil. But they will know all that within a month,” promises teacher Cosette.

For the residents of the central prison of Port-Gentil, the majority of whom are very young, these courses also allow them to reconnect with their studies for an hour and improve their communication skills.

“They are very excited to know that one day they will be able to write and read. The goal is for them to one day pass the CEP or BEPC and that is the challenge we have set ourselves,” she concludes.

The literacy project responds to the concern for the reintegration of prisoners. This learning allows these people in conflict with the law to consider the post-prison period with more confidence.
