A 42-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday by the Liège Criminal Court to a five-year prison sentence for having committed the rape of his fellow inmate while he was incarcerated at Lantin prison. The victim was temporarily incarcerated there for a case in which she was ultimately acquitted.

The victim was a man who had been convicted by default following being denounced as the perpetrator of a sexual assault on Place Saint-Lambert in Liège. He was the subject of immediate arrest. This man had been preventively incarcerated in Lantin prison. He was then acquitted by the Liège Court of Appeal.

During his incarceration, the defendant was raped by his fellow prisoner. He had been drugged and woke up to find signs of rape. These findings were substantiated by a medical expertise. The defendant had already been convicted twice for rape. One handed down in Italy and one in Belgium, with a sentence of eight years in prison, for the rapes of three ladies.

The court sentenced him to a new prison term of five years. Compensation of 7,000 euros was awarded to the man who was the victim.
