LH deputy Pernkopf: Christmas food tastes best when it’s served locally and doesn’t have to travel thousands of kilometers

St. Pölten (OTS) – Lower Austria’s farmers make an important contribution to security of supply all year round – this also applies during the Christmas holidays. “Lower Austria is a country with traditions. Even at Christmas you should pay attention to what is on your plate. There is no need for imported salmon from Norway when we have fresh, regional and, above all, high-quality food like carp on our doorstep,” says LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf, who adds: “In Lower Austria, we are supplied by excellent food producers who produce their products without offer long transport routes and thus protect the environment. This not only strengthens domestic production, but also keeps added value in the country.”

Carp, for example, has a long tradition as a Lenten and Christmas dish and has always been bred in the fish ponds of the Waldviertel and also in other regions of Lower Austria. Lower Austria’s regionally produced fish farms have an excellent reputation. Whether from ponds, lakes or rivers – local fish are characterized by very good quality, great diversity of species and freshness due to short transport routes. In addition, local fish is a resource-saving food. Many businesses offer freshly caught fish ready to cook or bone-free.

Regardless of whether it is fish, meat or vegetables, it is important that attention is paid to regionality. In Lower Austria, almost everything that cannot be missing from the Christmas table is produced in-house. “In addition to the classic specialties such as meat, sausage, cheese, dairy products and vegetables, innovative companies from Lower Austria produce legumes, rice and tofu,” explains Pernkopf. This means you can find the right products for the perfect Christmas dinner for everyone at the Christmas table. The blue and yellow winemakers guarantee the right wine and juice accompaniment on offer.
