Princess Kate arrived in a green jacket for a screening of a short film chronicling Federer’s exploits in the grass tournament.
Federer’s entrance to the cabin was accompanied by standing ovations, to be stationed to the left of the Princess of Wales, who put an end to the endless applause by sitting down, calling on the former stadium star to do the same.
Then Elena Rybakina, the defending champion, entered Kazakhstan to face American Shelby Rodgers.
Federer, 41, has moved away from tennis since the emotional farewell at the Laver Cup in London, to Jani, his rival and Spanish friend Rafael Nadal, but he was similarly honored on the grass courts during the German Halle tournament last month.
He became the first player to win 20 major titles in 2018 in Australia, and he holds the record at Wimbledon with eight titles between 2003 and 2017. He may be joined this year by Serbian Novak Djokovic, who is aspiring to achieve his record 24th title in the four major tournaments.
American Martina Navratilova holds the absolute record at Wimbledon with nine titles.
Federer’s last match, 41, dates back to the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals, when he lost to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in three sets, the last of which was a crushing score of 0-6.
