Ramallah – World of the Nation Princess Diana’s sweater topped the conversation on social media and various search engines, following it was announced that it was sold for an astronomical price that broke the record, as its price reached $1.1 million at Sotheby’s recent auction during New York Fashion Week.

The sweater topped the inaugural Fashion Icons auction held by Sotheby’s this September, and online bidding was opened from August 31 until September 14 during New York Fashion Week.

This sweater broke the record held by Sotheby’s for selling the most expensive Princess Diana dress ever in January of this year, which cost $604,800. According to (Layalina)

The Princess Diana sweater that was sold is characterized by being a red woolen sweater printed with white sheep and a black one. This sweater was designed for only $50 in 1981, and was available for anyone to purchase.

Six pieces were designed, one of which was for Princess Diana, who wore it with blue jeans when she was 19 years old to watch Prince Charles, then, play a polo match in June 1981, just one month before their royal wedding.

Sotheby’s had announced the auction, and expected the price of Princess Diana’s wool sweater, which it called the “Black Sheep,” to range between $52,300 and $91,600.

It is noteworthy that this piece was designed by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, who founded their brand (Warm and Wonderful). After publishing a photo of Princess Diana with that sweater, the two designers received a letter from Buckingham Palace informing them that the Princess of Wales had damaged the piece. The two designers actually completed a new version of the sweater, and received a letter of thanks from the princess’s private secretary.

Diana wore her second version of the jacket in a polo match in which Charles participated in 1983, and she wore the piece with a white blouse, a black bow, and white pants.

After nearly four decades, the auction house revealed that in March 2023, designer Joanna Osborne found the first damaged sweater in a box in its warehouse.

The house said: “A small box contained the original sweater that the late princess had sent for repair. Thus, following nearly four decades, the original sweater may find its way to a unique collector.” It was then put up for auction.

According to a Sotheby’s press release, the jacket sold for a total of $1.143 million, with bidding jumping from $190,000 to its final price following a 15-minute battle.
