Prince William: His impassioned speech on the environment and the unshaven… look

Speaking very passionately in a video speech presented at the United Nations General Assembly in New York as part of the ambitious Leveraging for 30×30 and Beyond: The road to CBD COP16 event he explained the “serious threat” facing the planet.

In the same week the royal family announced the 15 finalists for the prestigious annual Earthshot awards, 42-year-old William was filmed in a very English setting, likely at the family home in Windsor.

William, still appearing clean-shaven and wearing a smart gray jacket and white shirt, spoke of how his travels around the world had found him ‘humbled by the extraordinary beauty of the Earth’.

However, he then urged leaders to come together to do more to tackle the nature crisis, saying a million species face extinction.

The Prince said: “If we want to keep this planet sustainable for our children and grandchildren, we must act urgently.”

He added: “We must act urgently to protect at least 30% of our land, inland waters and oceans by 2030.

“This means increasing international funding for nature, aligning financial flows from disaster to regeneration, and rapidly expanding and improving critical protected and conserved areas.

“It means working with indigenous peoples and local communities – as the traditional custodians of biodiversity – learning from their wisdom on how to live in harmony with nature. We must all ensure that they have the resources and rights to keep their lands.

“It means we must stop the unsustainable production and consumption of natural resources. And that means we need to redirect the harmful subsidies that wreak havoc on our natural world and invest in alternatives to harmful activities.”

Earlier this week, the royal revealed the potential recipients of its latest Earthshot Prize – and a £5 million prize pot.

The Prince said there had been a record registration of nearly 2,500 nominations from 139 countries in 2024, each boasting an innovative solution to the most pressing climate and environmental challenges facing the world today.

The Prince of Wales recorded his message in Windsor last month and appeared to continue his summer glow wearing a navy shacket – a trendy shirt/jacket hybrid – with his much-talked-about beard.

The Earthshot Prize is one of the Crown Prince’s major “passion projects” and seeks to find and scale up positive solutions to the climate crisis in five key areas: Protecting and restoring nature, Cleaning our air, Revitalizing our oceans, Build A Waste- Free world and fix our climate.
