Eight grandchildren War Elizabeth II watch over the grandmother’s coffin. The procession comes hours following King Charles III and Prince William toured London.

As reported AFPSunday (18/9/2022), William and his brother, Prince Harry, led a 15-minute vigil inside Westminster Hall which has accommodated tens of thousands of mourners since the late queen began to lie down.

Queen Elizabeth II stood still with lowered eyes as members of the public passed her. Harry – who twice toured with the British Army in Afghanistan – put on his military uniform, though no longer a royal, following being given special permission by his father.

King Charles III and his eldest son William earlier pleased mourners who had queued all night to see Queen Elizabeth’s casket before Monday’s state funeral.

Shouts of ‘God save the king’ came from the crowd by the river as the nobles thanked the citizens who waited patiently in line. Charles would then meet some of the many world leaders who had arrived for the funeral.

“I was very happy. He was very calm, and friendly, and he was very gentle,” said Geraldine Potts-Ahmad, a secretary in her late 50s, as she struggled to contain her emotions following shaking hands with King Charles.

“He will be the best king. That gentleness and gentleness–I see a queen in that.”

The death of Queen Elizabeth at the age of 96, a record-breaking 70 years on the throne, has sparked an outpouring of emotion. Tens of thousands of people queued for more than 25 hours to see his coffin. Volunteers handed out blue blankets to keep out the cold at night.
