In the extremely rich Sultanate of Brunei, Prince Abdul Mateen married his fiancée Anisha Rosnah during ten days of lavish celebrations. The 32-year-old, who was once considered one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors, is Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s tenth child. He is therefore not the heir to the throne – but the lavish celebration, including a procession through the capital Bandar Seri Begawan in an open Rolls Royce, was still worthy of a king.

Thousands of people lined the streets and cheered the newlyweds. The wedding celebrations began on January 7th and were scheduled to end on Tuesday. Prince Mateen posted photos of the various ceremonies on social networks, where he has millions of followers. “Thank you for celebrating with us on this special occasion. It means a lot to us,” he wrote. His wife Anisha is the granddaughter of an important advisor to the Sultan, who is considered one of the richest men in the world. She reportedly owns a fashion label and owns parts of a tourism company.

“Anisha Rosnah mesmerized guests with a simple, long-sleeved white wedding dress and an exquisite bejeweled bridal veil that covered her hair,” wrote Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, praising the bride’s elegance. “To complete the look, Anisha wore a Tiara decorated with diamonds.”

Foreign state guests also traveled to the Sultanate for the wedding, including Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as the Borneo Bulletin newspaper reported. Representatives from various royal families also took part, including from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

The Islamic Sultanate of Brunei is located on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo, the other parts of which belong to Malaysia and Indonesia. Thanks to large oil and gas reserves, Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world. At the same time, the human rights situation is repeatedly criticized. The authoritarian Sultan began introducing Sharia law in 2014. There are severe penalties for homosexuality in particular.
