The imperial family of Brazil descends from Emperor Peter II through his daughter, Princess Isabelle, wife of Prince Gaston d’Orléans, Count of Eu, grandson of King Louis-Philippe I. King Felipe VI also has the King of the French among his ancestors. Their most recent common ancestor is Prince Alphonse de Bourbon of the Two Sicilies (1841-1934), son of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies.

“My cousin heard I was here in Madrid and insisted on seeing me, we took a photo at the end of the meeting”, explained the young prince Maximilian on his Instagram account dedicated to his passions. Max, like a good Brazilian, is passionate regarding football but also golf and especially art. During confinement, Max illustrated and sold thousands of masks, the profits from the sales of which were donated to the AMPARA Silvestre association, which deals with the preservation of wild animals, notably the jaguar. He sells his animal drawings and related products on his website.

With a dad in politics, it’s no wonder Max is already so involved. Prince Luiz Philippe is currently the only member of Brazil’s imperial family involved in politics. The prince is the nephew of the current head of the family, Prince Bertrand, who is the pretender to the throne of Brazil. Prince Luiz Philippe has been a federal deputy since 2019, close to Jair Bolsonaro. In 2008, he married Fernanda Miguita. Maximilian is their only child.

Prince Eudes, who died in 2022, was the second of twelve children of Prince Pedro Henrique of Orléans-Braganza, head of the family in his time. Prince Eudes lost his dynasty rights for himself and his descendants due to his unequal marriage. Prince Luiz Philippe is the eldest son of Prince Eudes. Luiz Philippe cannot therefore claim the throne of Brazil.
