UNITED KINGDOM – After a very noticeable absence on Monday, Harry arrived this Tuesday, June 6, before a court in London, as shown in the video at the top of the article. He is due to testify once morest a tabloid accused of hacking voicemails, the first appearance of a member of the royal family on the witness stand in more than a century.
Before that, only the future King Edward VII had indeed had to do so, in 1890, for a libel trial. The son of Queen Victoria, Prince of Wales at the time, was clearly in a “state of nervousness” in this case, according to reports uncovered by The Guardian. The jury ended up siding with the prince, but this court appearance would have damaged his reputation. He had also testified in a divorce case twenty years earlier, in 1870.
Since these two cases, only one other person from the British royal family has been in court, but this time in the dock. This is Princess Anne in 2022, who had pleaded guilty an offense under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Exiled to California with his wife Meghan, the youngest son of King Charles III, in trouble with the rest of the British royal family, has initiated a series of legal proceedings once morest British newspapers.
His presence scheduled for Tuesday at the High Court in London for the lawsuit brought once morest the publishing company of the Daily Mirror gives considerable media weight to his fight once morest the tabloid press. He judges the latter responsible for the death of his mother Diana, chased by paparazzi in Paris in 1997 and also accuses him of harassment towards Meghan.
“At least 30 private detectives” requested by the Daily Mirror
The false start of his testimony, however, clouded his approach. Summoned on Monday in case his turn at the helm came, the Duke of Sussex did not show up on the grounds that his daughter Lilibet’s second birthday on Sunday did not allow him to fly in time from Los Angeles.
Judge Timothy Fancourt did not hide his annoyance, saying to himself “a little surprised”, which portends a tense exchange with Harry when he finally shows up. And the case puts the prince back in the position of being accused by his many detractors in the UK, where he is often portrayed as a spoiled child.
In the ongoing trial, which opened last month in the High Court in London, Harry accuses the publisher of the Daily Mirror of using illicit methods to gather information, including hacking into voicemails, between 1996 and 2010.
Thirty-three contentious articles were retained by the judge in the procedure out of 147 referred to by Harry. Laying out the prince’s grievances, his lawyer claimed the media group used the services of“at least 30 private detectives”.
The Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) – which in addition to the daily Daily Mirror publishes its Sunday and people editions – admitted at the start of the trial in its written conclusions “some evidence” unlawful collection of information.
MGN issued an apology “without reservations” and promised that this situation would not happen once more ” Never “. The publisher’s lawyer, Andrew Green, on the other hand, rejected the accusations of interception of voice messages and swept aside certain accusations, highlighting the age of the facts.
