Prince Harry and his wife, Megan, were subjected to a “disastrous pursuit” by paparazzi in the United States, which almost resulted in their car colliding with other cars, according to his spokesman.
This came following the couple attended an award ceremony, held in New York, in which Megan was honored.
Pictures on social media showed Harry, Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, in a taxi.
The BBC has not been able to independently verify the details of this incident.
“Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Lady Ragland were the subject of a near-disastrous car chase by a group of highly aggressive paparazzi,” the prince’s spokesman said in a statement.
“This violent chase, which lasted more than two hours, resulted in multiple near misses with other road drivers, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers,” he added.
The New York Police Department did not immediately confirm knowledge of the incident.
“Being a public figure who commands a level of public interest should never be at the expense of anyone’s safety,” the prince’s spokesman said.
He added: “The publication of these images, given the ways in which they were taken, encourages a practice of extreme snooping that is dangerous for all persons involved.”
The incident is said to have occurred following the couple’s first public appearance together since the coronation of King Charles III earlier this month.
Prince Harry, during an interview with the BBC in the documentary “Diana, 7 Days”, referred to the intrusive photojournalists as “a pack of dogs” who had been chasing his mother.
“Every time she went out, there was a group of people waiting for her. I mean a pack of dogs, following her, chasing her, teasing her, calling her names, spitting on her, trying to get a reaction, taking a picture of her criticizing.”
Earlier this week, a lawyer representing Prince Harry in a London court said he should be allowed to appeal a government decision that would deny him the ability to pay for police protection while in the UK.
Harry and Megan gave up their royal roles in 2020, and moved to the United States partly because of what they described as severe media harassment.
The prince has long spoken of his anger at the intrusive press, which he blames for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a limousine crash while fleeing a pursuit of paparazzi in Paris.
