“Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Dangerous NYC Car Chase: Details and Reactions”

2023-05-17 14:54:00

The incident began around 10 p.m. following an awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended. According to AFP journalists present at this gala, the prince and his wife did not walk the red carpet and entered and left through the back of the building where the evening was taking place.

“This fierce chase, which lasted more than two hours, nearly resulted in multiple near-miss collisions with other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers”, Harry’s spokesperson said in a statement. “Although a public figure arouses interest, this should never be to the detriment of anyone’s safety,” warned the spokesperson, denouncing the “dissemination of these images (…) encouraging a very intrusive practice (in private life) which is dangerous”.

An acquaintance of the couple told PageSix that “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are extremely upset and shaken. It was horrible”.

The Duke of Sussex has not had British police bodyguards since 2020, when he ceased to be an “active royal” and left the UK for a new life in the United States.

As a reminder, Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, died on August 31, 1997 in a car accident under the Alma bridge in Paris, while she was being chased by paparazzi.
