Prince Ernst August of Hanover turns 70

Prince Ernst August of Hanover turns 70

He heads the oldest European noble family and is a great-grandson of the last German Emperor Wilhelm. Ernst August von Hannover, who turns 70 on Monday, is best known to the public for a series of escapades that also brought him into conflict with the law.

Scandal in Grünau

In 2020, an Austrian court sentenced him to a suspended sentence for an attack on police officers in his hunting lodge in Grünau. The judges found that the prince, who was under the influence of alcohol, had injured an officer and insulted other emergency services.

The aristocrat, whose full name is Ernst August Albert Paul Otto Rupprecht Oskar Berthold Friedrich-Ferdinand Christian-Ludwig Prince of Hanover, was born on February 26, 1954 in Hanover as the future head of the Guelph House.

He is training to become a farmer, works as a businessman and as an animal and documentary filmmaker. At the end of the 1990s, following divorcing Chantal Hochuli, with whom he had two sons, he married Caroline of Monaco (67), the sister of the Monegasque Prince Albert.

Around the same time, the ancestor of the legendary medieval Duke Henry the Lion made headlines for the first time with an attack: in 1998 he attacked a journalist with an umbrella. The charges will be dropped in exchange for compensation for pain and suffering. Further waves of outrage followed – for example because he was said to have urinated in the immediate vicinity of the Turkish pavilion at the 2000 World Exhibition in Hanover. A legal dispute over an attack on a hotelier in Kenya has dragged on for years. In the end, the prince is legally sentenced to a fine of 200,000 euros for slapping the face.

In 1999 Alexandra, the daughter of Caroline and Ernst August, was born in the hospital in Vöcklabruck. Over the years, the couple’s appearances together become increasingly rare. This also triggers speculation. The prince mostly lives in his hunting lodge in Grünau, while Caroline returns to Monaco.
