A few months following its public presentation, the future Prince Charles velodrome is taking shape with greater clarity, in Mondorf-les-Bains. The equipment will take place on the “Op Gréimelter” field, on 6.2 hectares to the east of the town, between the football stadium and the A13 motorway. It will also include a cycling track, a swimming pool, a climbing wall and several sports fields linked to the future International School of Mondorf. It should in principle be completed in 2027 or 2028, following four years of work.

The site will also house the headquarters of the Luxembourg Cycling Federation (FSCL). The future complex – with a total gross area of 26,200 m², more than one and a half times that of the Stade de Luxembourg – will be able to accommodate 4,000 people and three main disciplines: cycling, swimming and indoor activities.

The cycle track, made of wood, will be 250 meters long and seven meters wide. It will include a central area (infield), capable of accommodating three sports fields for the students. The capacity of the stands has been set at 1,000 seats and 500 standing places. For its part, the swimming pool with a capacity of 1,200 visitors will include six pools, one of which will be equipped with slides.

A global budget of 115 million euros

The project goes beyond the simple framework of sport, since a brasserie with a view of the velodrome and a cafeteria for the swimming pool are also planned, as well as shops. A public square will be created to connect the complex to the school building. A 250-space car park will be set up as well as a 50-space kiss and ride area.

The mayor of the town, Steve Reckel (DP) signed the building permit at the end of 2022. The bill might be voted on in the coming weeks, before the legislative elections of October 8, 2023. “We have been working for four years on this project and we can’t wait for the work to begin, indicated to The essential Steve Reckel. There is of course the velodrome but more generally a real sports center, including a swimming pool that we have been waiting for several years”.

The project also includes a swimming pool with six basins.
