Prince Charles and his wife visiting Canada next week

For the 19th time, Prince Charles will be visiting Canada next week.

He will be accompanied for the occasion by his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. They will be in the country to celebrate the platinum jubilee, therefore the 70 years of accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II.

They will therefore make three cities in three days. On May 17, they will be in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. They will visit a fishing village.

The Prince and Duchess will then make a stop in the nation’s capital, Ottawa, where they will meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon, among others. They will also meet members of the Ukrainian community.

On May 19, members of the royal family will set foot in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, where a visit to an indigenous community in the region.

Some, like the professor emeritus in sociology at the University of Ottawa Diane Pacom, are surprised that the prince and his wife shun major Canadian cities like Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.

“Their choices are places that are off the beaten path, but those are the places where you continue to see an allegiance to royalty,” says Ms. Pacom.

This visit comes as Prince Charles takes on more and more royal and political responsibilities. It was he who read the throne speech to the British parliament this week. This is therefore part of the transition that royalty is trying to establish between the present monarch and the heir to the throne.
