Primoz Roglic and Jumbo-Visma, it’s over. Or almost. The 33-year-old Slovenian announced their separation at the start of the Tour of Emilia this Saturday. “I can confirm that I will be leaving the team,” he said to put an end to the rumors. He still has three races left this season, in Italy, with the Tour of Lombardy as an exclamation point, in a week.
“I am here to compete,” recalled Roglic, referring to “details” to be resolved regarding his departure. He is linked to Jumbo-Visma until 2025 and the termination/modification of his contract must therefore be the subject of negotiations, including with the future team of the three-time Vuelta winner, who has not given any information regarding its destination.
The “yellow and black” Twitter account reposted the interview with its emblematic rider, adding the following message: “After a memorable adventure together, the Jumbo-Visma offers Primoz Roglic the opportunity to pursue his ambitions elsewhere in the future.” And to remind: “The emphasis will first be placed on the next Italian races.”
Tour de France objective?
The soap opera regarding Primoz Roglic’s future has gained momentum in recent days, alongside that of a possible merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step. Coming to cycling relatively late, “Rogla” has won 73 of his 79 professional victories since 2016 and his arrival in the team which has just signed a hat-trick in the Tour of Spain.
This hat-trick, in fact, did not crown Roglic, 3rd behind Sepp Kuss and Jonas Vingegaard, winner of a second Tour de France a few weeks earlier. This year’s winner of the Giro, the man who likes to celebrate his successes with a telemark, in reference to his past as a ski jumper, was no longer an omnipotent leader internally, in stage races.
His change of team might offer Primoz Roglic the opportunity to aim for the coronation on the Grande Boucle. A coronation which narrowly escaped him and in incredible conditions – in 2020 once morest Tadej Pogacar – and which would take his already impressive record to a dimension worthy of the pantheon.
