Primoz Roglicthree-time defending champion and main competitor of Remco Evenepoel to victory in this 77th Tour of Spain, will not start the 17th stage of the Vuelta this Wednesday, announced Jumbo Visma on Twitter. “Unfortunately, he will not be at the start of the stage due to his crash on Tuesday“wrote the Dutch team.
“Get well champion. Thank you for these beautiful moments on this Vuelta. You had ambitious plans for the past few days but unfortunately it is otherwise.“
On Tuesday, the 32-year-old Slovenian attacked in the final bump of the stage leading the riders to Tomares. Exploding the peloton, he took four sprinters in his wheel while Remco Evenepoel, red jersey, suffered a puncture at the same time.
While there were only a few meters left, Roglic touched the wheel of Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and found himself on the ground. Despite apparent injuries, he crossed the line and was credited with the time of the winner, Dane Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo). The Slovenian will therefore have grabbed 8 seconds in vain from Evenepoel, who was ranked in the peloton time.
