Prime Minister’s directive to investigate the Neelum Jhelum dam project

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Pakistan-administered Kashmir Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project Strict action has been directed once morest those responsible for the defects.

According to Radio Pakistan, while chairing a meeting regarding the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project in Islamabad on Sunday, the Prime Minister directed to complete the investigation report regarding the recent shutdown of this important project immediately.

The Prime Minister added that it was unfortunate that despite design flaws pointed out by experts, concrete lining was not done in the tunnels of the project.

Shahbaz Sharif questioned the authorities as to why a detailed geological survey was not conducted regarding the project. According to him: ‘How ironic that such a large and important project was criminally negligent when it was also criminally negligent not to get the project verified by a third party.’

The Prime Minister also directed to immediately form a committee to reactivate the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project.

In the meeting, former Home Secretary Shahid Khan and the head of the investigation committee investigating the recent irregularities in the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project presented the initial investigation report.

The meeting was informed that the reduction in power generation from the project occurred on April 29 this year due to pressure drop in the right and left tunnels of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project and the place where the current fault occurred is a rock burst zone. On May 2, electricity production was completely stopped.

The meeting was told that due to the closure of the project, the national exchequer is losing crores of rupees.

The meeting was further informed that in 2021 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) During the regime of , a significant drop in power generation was observed due to an abnormal drop in pressure in the Hadres tunnel, however this matter was ignored and not reported and deliberately ignored.

The meeting was told that in 2021, no repair work was done by the previous government regarding the defect in the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, which increased the losses manifold, which was a criminal negligence.

The meeting was informed that the failure of Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project in 2021 is also being made a part of the investigation report. In the briefing, it was further informed that the power generation remained suspended in 2022 due to malfunctions in the Telrace tunnel of the project.

The meeting was informed that in the construction of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, geophysical and seismic factors were ignored and proper concrete lining of Headrace Tunnel was not done.
