Prime Minister Trudeau urges Canadians to leave Lebanon ‘immediately’

“It is the responsibility of all Canadians (including those there) to do everything they can to leave Lebanon while the airports are still open,” Mr. Trudeau said, stressing that the risk of escalating violence between the Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah is “true”.

Some 20,000 Canadians are in Lebanon, authorities estimate. In late June, the Canadian government had stressed that it was discouraging travel to the country, citing the “unstable and unpredictable” situation.

The Canadian Armed Forces have preemptively moved emergency response resources to Cyprus to be able to quickly evacuate nationals of the country in the event of a complete disruption to commercial flights.

“We seek to be ready for any eventuality,” Mr. Trudeau emphasized yesterday, but “the best thing for Canadians to do is to avoid traveling to the Middle East.”

The war in the Gaza Strip, which was triggered by an unprecedented raid by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on southern sectors of the Israeli territory on October 7, resulted in hostilities on the Israel-Lebanon border multiplying the next day, as the Lebanese movement Hezbollah opened ” front’ with the Israeli army.

The two sides were involved in 2006 in a 34-day conflict, the “second Lebanon war”, as it is called in Israel, or the “July war” as it is known in Lebanon.
