Did you know that the prices of air tickets to Cuba will rise? In mid-July, the Cuban government’s Minister of Finance presented a proposal to update the airport tax with an increase that will be reflected in the final cost of a ticket to the island.
At the Economic Affairs Committee, the Minister of Finance and Prices, Vladimir Regueiro Ale, presented a proposal for a policy aimed at updating the Cuban tax system. One of the proposed measures is to increase the airport services fee for passengers to 40 dollars.
And you may be wondering, what are airport taxes and why do they affect the price of tickets to Cuba? Well, these taxes are mandatory fees that passengers must pay for the use of the facilities and services of an airport.
This tax, regulated by law, is used to cover the costs of maintenance, operation and security of airports, as well as to finance improvement and expansion projects. Airlines usually incorporate these fees into the final ticket price, although they may also present them as an additional charge.

Airfare prices to Cuba rise
Currently, for example, for a flight between Spain and Cuba, the island imposes a fee of approximately 24 euros.
With the approval of the proposal to update the Cuban tax system, this tax will rise to 40 US dollars (about 36 euros at the current exchange rate), impacting the final price of a ticket to Cuba. In other words, a ticket from Madrid to Havana would cost 10 euros more.
In addition, since the end of 2020, the Cuban government has implemented a health fee of US$30 for each traveler arriving in the country.
Given the current health crisis in Cuba and the state of the island’s main airport, many are questioning how these taxes and fees are distributed, because it does not seem to be aimed at improving the quality of passenger service.
