PRICES of shallots and garlic in Palu, Central Sulawesi, have risen once more. Reduced supply entering the market is the cause.

One of the traders, Nur Indah, said that the price of shallots has currently increased to IDR 60 thousand per kg from the previous price of IDR 45 thousand per kg.

Meanwhile, the price for garlic went from IDR 40 thousand per kg to IDR 60 thousand per kg.

“The price increase has only been in the last three days,” he explained to Media Indonesia at the Inpres Manonda Traditional Market (PTIM) Palu, Friday (19/4).

According to Indah, the price increase occurred because the supply of shallots and garlic has decreased since the last week.

“The stock I am selling was supplied three days ago. “Usually there is supply every day,” he added.

Another trader, Hamdi Anwar, explained that apart from reduced supply, the increase in onion prices also occurred because prices at distributor level had already risen.

“The purchase capital from the distributor is IDR 57 thousand per kg. “Sold for Rp. 60 thousand per kg so that there is still a profit of Rp. 3 thousand per kg,” he said.

According to Hamdi, based on information from several distributors, the lack of supply of shallots and white onions entering the market is because a number of farmers have not yet entered the main harvest.

In addition, some supplies are still on the way.

“Fortunately, red and white onions are not rare. “If supply runs smoothly, prices will definitely fall once more,” he said. (Z-6)
