Prices fall for the second day in a row

Fuel prices continued to fall yesterday in Lebanon for the second consecutive day, following an appreciation of the national currency on the parallel market and the fall in the price of oil on the world market. According to new prices published by the Ministry of Energy and Water, 20 liters of 95 and 98 octane petrol have seen a reduction of 4,000 pounds, and now cost 672,000 and 683,000 pounds respectively. The 20 liters of diesel are priced at 714,000 pounds, following a drop of 33,000 pounds, while the domestic gas cylinder now costs 340,000, its price having fallen by 7,000 pounds. Fuel oil used for generators, which have become essential to produce electricity in a country where public electricity is rationed for many hours a day, is priced at 1,219 dollars per ton.

Commenting on these new rates, the spokesman for the service station owners’ union Georges Brax indicated yesterday that the price of gasoline has decreased following the fall in the price of approximately 7 dollars per kiloliter of imported gasoline and in due to the stability of the dollar/pound exchange rate listed on the Sayrafa platform, which remains fixed at 25,200 pounds. The price per tonne of imported diesel also fell by regarding $36, he added. Finally, the trade unionist noted that the drop in diesel and gas prices is also due to the drop in the rate on the parallel market, which was hovering around 28,500 pounds yesterday.
