If you are sick, bring your checkbook when going to private clinics, because hospital bills have increased.

Are private clinics sick of inflation or new taxation? According to L’Observateur, private health establishments must now claim VAT (Value Added Tax) from patients on their hospitalization services, room rentals and other hospital amenities. Suspended in 2011, the measure, which was classified as a social exemption, was reintroduced by the 2023 finance law, resulting in an additional 10% on hospitalization costs. Only care is exempt from VAT.

Private clinics denounce a “total inconsistency”, confiding that the patient who paid 50,000 CFA francs per day for the single room will have to pay an additional 5,000 CFA francs, with the new taxation. However, he continues, “rates vary, depending on the level of the rooms, from 40,000 to 60,000 CFA francs. » As for double rooms, the costs vary between 30,000 and 35,000.

The tax administration considers “that some of the clinics offered quite luxurious services as if we were in a hotel”. And that many clinics risk suffering a tax adjustment.
