Canada’s largest supermarket chain is following in the footsteps of its siblings around the world. Loblaw will freeze the prices of 1,500 products until the end of January due to inflation.
The measure affects all 1,500 products of the nameless brand, Loblaw’s private label.
“Anyone who regularly visits the grocery store has noticed that the cost of food has skyrocketed over the past year. What is most frustrating is that this situation is largely beyond our control,” Loblaw President Galen Weston wrote in an email to his clients.
He added that measurement is part of what the company can control.
The Canadian grocer thus becomes the first to voluntarily freeze prices in Canada.
“For months, several grocers around the world have opted to freeze or even reduce certain food prices in their stores,” writes food sector expert Sylvain Charlebois.
This is particularly the case with the German Lidl and the French Carrefour.
