Compared to the Netherlands, the price difference with the Netherlands was greater than 10% for several product categories: frozen food products (+15.9%), cleaning and household products (+15 .5%), kitchen and tableware (+13.3%), personal care and hygiene products (+12.4%), dry food (+12.4%), animal food (+ 12.2%), perishable foods (+10.8%) and baby foods (+10.3%). Also for other product categories, the price difference was more than 7.0%.

The price difference with France was greatest for baby food (+15.7%), animal food (+13.9%), perishable food (+13.6%), dry food (+12.7%), non-alcoholic drinks (+12.6%) and frozen food products (+10.1%). For other product categories, the price difference was less than 10.0%. Health care products as well as confectionery and biscuits were more or less as expensive in the Netherlands as in Belgium.

Compared to Germany, alcoholic beverages were “only” 6.4% more expensive in Belgium, while the price gap for other product categories was between 9.9% (cleaning articles and fire starter products) and 35.2% (animal food).

However, certain groups of branded products were in some cases cheaper in Belgium. For example, car care products are on average 23.5% cheaper in Belgium than in the Netherlands, and alcoholic beverages also cost 2.2% less in Belgium than in the Netherlands. in 2022, while these drinks appeared to be still 1.4% more expensive in 2017. Baby care products cost on average 19.0% less in Belgium than in France. Cosmetic products and perfumes were also cheaper in Belgium (7.9%).
