On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the Prévent’Timm truck and the French Federation of Diabetics were passing through to raise awareness of a disease that is increasingly present in the French landscape.

In 2020, 3.5 million people are affected by diabetes in France. A figure which should not decrease according to the scientific journal The Lancet. The number of cases worldwide is expected to double by 2050.

So to deal with a progressing disease, one of the best ways remains prevention. The Prévent’Timm truck and the French Federation of Diabetics were present at the Lourdes market to meet the public, raise awareness and screen.

Significant risks

“There are two forms of diabetes. Type 1 affects 10% of the population and is detected more in young people. The pancreas stops working, cases are increasing but we still do not know exactly why. Type 2 is the most common (90% of cases) and is mainly detected in people over 45 years old” explains Pascal Allayrangue. The cause is an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Unbalanced diet, rise of fast food and junk food, lack of physical activity and the resulting risk of being overweight.

The disease leads to a set of negative consequences, risks of stroke, risks of hypoglycemia, blindness. “Before the 1960s it was a fatal disease. Today there are treatments: for example insulin pumps, lancing devices or artificial pancreases for type 1 diabetes.” However, the drugs needed to treat diabetes are victims of a shortage, the alert for which was raised a little over a year ago. “It’s a global problem that concerns all chronic diseases. There is a lack of stock,” laments Pascal Allayrangue.

There are clear ways to prevent type 2 diabetes. “A good diet is good health. The use of the Nutri-Score can also help to make choices regarding the products consumed. However, we can always treat ourselves from time to time with a McDonald’s or other” explains Caroline Soulé, dietitian.

The importance of diet joins that of physical activity as described by Gaël André from the Hautes-Pyrénées sports department office. “Move well and eat well. For example, walking every day can do good once morest pathologies. Obviously, you have to adapt your efforts according to your age.”

But diabetes also represents a heavy mental burden to bear, adds Caroline Soulé, “Those close to us do not necessarily understand the disease. There can be a feeling of exclusion linked to social pressure and stress due to medication.” To deal with this, the French Federation of Diabetics organizes discussion groups in Tarbes where people with diabetes come together to talk regarding their difficulties.

Around 750,000 people are unknowingly diabetic and screening is therefore a necessity. You should not wait for the first symptoms to contact your doctor.
