Preventive Arrests Made in Brussels Protests Following Teenager’s Death: Latest Updates

Brussels – The Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone made around fifty “preventive” administrative arrests on Friday, as part of an operation aimed at preventing riots following calls to gather in the downtown, to protest once morest the death in France of a teenager, killed by a policeman.

Following calls made on social networks, young people gathered on Friday followingnoon in various places in Brussels, according to the police.

The Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone is on the alert, following the first gatherings of young people on Thursday evening, which turned into confrontation with the police.

“We operate with a command unit,” spokeswoman for the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone, Ilse Van de Keere, told the Belga agency on Friday evening.

“Coordination is ensured by the corps commander. All the partners concerned are present at the regional crisis center,” she said.

Early Friday evening, around fifty people have already been administratively arrested. “These are preventive arrests of people in possession of equipment, which we can assume was intended to commit damage,” said Ilse Van de Keere.

Thursday evening, calls to gather had also been launched on social networks, in order to protest once morest the death in Nanterre, in the Paris suburbs, of Nahel, a 17-year-old teenager. He was killed at point-blank range by a policeman.

Police arrested a total of 64 people on Thursday evening.
