Prevention measures against Monkeypox virus infection

On July 8, 2022, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) updated its previous opinions on preventive measures regarding the transmission of the Monkeypox virus (MPXV).

  • The preventive measures to be implemented in the entourage of a case include the need for people with confirmed symptomatic MPXV infection to isolate themselves and to abstain from sexual intercourse until the disappearance of the skin lesions, the conduct to be followed at home and the recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting the environment around the case are detailed in the notice.
  • Preventive measures in healthcare settings concern staff, patients and visitors, as well as cleaning and disinfection measures for the patient’s environment.
  • The preventive measures for the general public and certain specific populations, in particular in gatherings and festive events are also specified; the HCSP recalls that only people in close physical contact with a person with symptomatic MPXV infection are exposed to the risk of being contaminated by this virus, that people infected or suspected of being infected with MPXV should not participate in festive gatherings and events involving intimate or sexual physical contact between participants.
