With the onset of hot weather in July, several cases of viral and bacterial meningitis were recorded in the Russian Federation. Doctor of Medicine, immunologist Vladislav Zhemchugov warned regarding the danger of transmission of infection in the heat.
“Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, it can be of two types according to the pathogen. The virus lives in hot weather in closed stagnant water bodies, this is one of the varieties of intestinal flu, it is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. The microbe is transmitted by airborne droplets, lives in the nasopharynx, causes severe purulent meningitis, ”explained Zhemchugov Radio Sputnik.
The immunologist added that a person can become infected with a virus when bathing in hot weather, with a bacterium when communicating, and the infected person may not know that he has pathogens on his mucous membranes and consider that this is a common cold. In severe cases, the infection leads to inflammation of the meninges, the symptoms of which are convulsions, loss of creation, and even death.
Earlier, Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko commented on the situation with 16 cases of meningococcal infection in the Sverdlovsk region, noting that outbreak is contained and there is no risk of spreading the disease. Vadim Pokrovsky, head of the department for the prevention and control of AIDS of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, said that the most dangerous symptom of meningococcal infection is Strong headache.
