In 2023, 213 patients were registered in Ugra in whom HIV progressed to the stage of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Aksana Ushakova, the head physician of the Center for Prevention and Control of AIDS, told a URA.RU correspondent regarding this.
“For the entire period of registration of cases of HIV infection in the Autonomous Okrug since 1994, 5281 cases of establishing the stage of AIDS were registered, of which in 2023 in 213 patients,” Ushakova cited statistics. It is clarified that AIDS is registered in a patient with the human immunodeficiency virus in the case when, due to a destroyed immune system, the human body is invaded by infectious diseases. Indicators of the development of AIDS can be: Pneumocystis pneumonia, cerebral toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis (both pulmonary and extrapulmonary), cancer and others.
According to Ushakova, it is possible to prolong the life of an AIDS patient with the help of antiretroviral therapy (ART). A treatment regimen with antiviral drugs is prescribed to each person individually. Medicines for therapy are supplied to the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug from the federal and regional budgets. “It is very important that the patient himself is interested in treatment, has the motivation and commitment to visit an infectious disease doctor and follow all recommendations for dispensary observation and treatment,” concluded the head physician of the district AIDS Center.
Earlier URA.RU wrote that in the Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug reside 16,700 people with HIV infection—every 104 Ugra residents are infected. At the same time, the most unfavorable epidemiological situation is in Urai, Megion, Pyt-Yakh and Berezovsky district.
