Preventing Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Importance of Balancing Legume Consumption in Vegetarian Diets

The German magazine “Helpraxisent” reported that excessive consumption of legumes threatens a deficiency of vitamin B12, which is important for the vital processes of the body.

Excessive consumption of legumes – as a substitute for animal protein in some vegetarian systems – leads to a lack of vitamin B12 in the body.

The German Society for Nutrition stated that animal foods – such as fish, meat, eggs and dairy products – provide vitamin B12, which means that animal foods in appropriate quantities are the guarantee of adequate supplies of this vitamin.

It is true that there are plant foods that contain vitamin B12 – such as cabbage and shiitake mushrooms – but they do not guarantee the body’s supply of sufficient quantities of it.

In such cases, German nutrition experts advise people who follow a vegetarian diet to take adequate amounts of vitamin B12 through nutritional supplements, following consulting a doctor.

Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to increased irritability, fatigue, cognitive impairment, a feeling of weakness, and nerve pain, and with severe cases, it appears in the form of shortness of breath, dizziness, nerve damage, loss of sensation in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, poor response, difficulty walking, and confusion.
