Preventing Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The Impact of Excessive Legume Consumption on the Body

The German magazine “Helpraxisent” reported that excessive consumption of legumes threatens a deficiency of vitamin B12, which is particularly important for the vital processes of the body.

Vitamin B12 deficiency appears in the body in the form of increased irritability, fatigue, cognitive impairment, a feeling of weakness and nerve pain, and with severe cases it appears in the form of shortness of breath, dizziness, nerve damage, loss of sensation in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, poor response, difficulty walking and confusion.

Excessive intake of legumes as a substitute for animal protein in some vegetarian systems causes a deficiency in the body’s supply of vitamin B12 (cobalamin).

The German Society for Nutrition explained that animal foods such as fish, meat, eggs and dairy products provide vitamin B12, which means that animal foods in appropriate quantities are the guarantee of adequate supplies of this vitamin.

It is true that there are plant foods that contain vitamin B12, such as cabbage and shiitake mushrooms, but they do not guarantee the body’s supply of sufficient quantities of it.

In such cases, German nutrition experts advised people who follow a vegetarian diet to take adequate amounts of vitamin B12 through nutritional supplements.
