The It’s Not Every Day Sunday team returned to the terrible fire which cost the lives of a family of six in Huy during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The commander of the Hemeco emergency zone, Stéphane Bouquette, intervened on the set and returned to the importance of smoke detectors.

Invited on the set of It’s not every day on Sunday, the commander of the Hemeco emergency zone, who intervened in the tragic fire in Huy which cost the life of a family of six people, drew up a sad observation. The deceased family’s home did not contain any detectors. “In this house, three detectors were needed: on the ground floor, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. There were none…”

In 2004, however, the Walloon government imposed the installation of smoke detectors in all its housing. Unfortunately little respected, this legislation would nevertheless avoid many tragedies. “When we go into intervention, in the majority of cases, when people are on the sidewalk, it’s because they have smoke detectors”explains Stéphane Bouquette to Christophe Deborsu and Salima Belabbas. “It saves lives. If people are inside, it’s because they weren’t informed that something was happening.” Not informed, since no detectors, therefore. “It’s often at night and therefore it’s too late…”

The people caught by the flames are therefore “mostly” people who are not equipped with smoke detectors, according to the commander of the Hemeco emergency zone. “But it is also possible that people are trapped even if they are informed that something is happening”he nevertheless emphasizes.

One detector per floor

Belgian legislation is this: a smoke detector must be installed on each floor of the accommodation. If the floor is greater than 80m², two detectors will need to be installed. And if the home contains more than four detectors, they will all have to be linked together. They need to be replaced approximately every ten years. Stéphane Bouquette warns regarding the battery change: “The problem is the batteries”he emphasizes.

Regarding tenants, it is good to know that the owner “must ensure that the building is safe”reminds the commander, and must provide a compliant smoke detector.
