A tragedy happened this weekend at the coast. A young man aged barely 20 died on the night of Saturday to Sunday, after drowning in the sea, according to information provided by the Bruges section of the West Flanders prosecutor’s office. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.

Originally from Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, the victim was swimming in the sea with friends in the evening, around 7:30 p.m., indicates RTL info. His friends would have tried to help him, but it was ultimately the emergency services who managed to pull the person in difficulty from the water.

In the aftermath, the emergency services called on everyone to be careful. “Please be careful. Do not go swimming outside supervised hours. And if you can’t swim, don’t go beyond your hips.”

”Listen to the rescuers”

According to Bart Tommelein, Open VLD mayor of Ostend, “the inhabitants of the coastal region and of Flanders know that they have to listen to the rescuers. We note that, if there are problems, it is mainly with people who come from the French-speaking part of the country. I am not targeting anyone, but they are not aware of the dangers of the sea. I call on my colleagues to get the message across better.”
