The infected person had not traveled. To prevent the spread of the virus transmitted by tiger mosquitoes, measures have been launched urgently by ARS Occitanie.

A person from Perpignan contracted the dengue virus when she had not travelled. It is therefore an autochthonous case, which means that she was bitten by an infected tiger mosquito.

The regional health agency having been notified, an action plan has been put in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

Dengue, an often mild disease

Dengue is a generally mild disease. Symptoms are similar to flu with high fever, joint pain, severe headache.

Contamination occurs through the bite of a tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) previously infected with the virus from a person during their illness.

First case

According to ARS Occitanie, the sick person was taken care of and his state of health does not inspire concern. On the other hand, the ARS is concerned regarding the transmission of the virus to other people because the person who contracted the disease had not traveled to an area where the virus circulated (tropical zone) in the 15 days preceding the appearance of the illnesses. symptoms.

This is the first case of autochthonous dengue fever recorded this year in Occitania since the start of the surveillance season, i.e. since May 1.

Planned actions

To avoid a possible spread of the virus, reinforced prevention measures are implemented in the area frequented by the sick person.

They mobilize the services of the State, ARS Occitanie, Public Health France, as well as health professionals in the sector and the mosquito control operator.

Mosquito control will therefore be effective in Perpignan in the area of the West Cemetery and Avenue d’Espagne to eliminate breeding sites and adult mosquitoes. Affected residents are notified in advance.

In addition, a local epidemiological survey of the neighborhood of the sick person will be carried out in order to identify any other sick people and the imported case at the origin of the transmission.

Other cases must be reported to the ARS. In the event of symptoms, people who have stayed or practiced an outdoor activity near the West Cemetery of Perpignan are invited to consult a doctor.
