Most strokes are not inevitable, they can be prevented, says Emilia Sidorovich, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Nervous and Neurosurgical Diseases of the Belarusian State Medical University:

– People can play a role in reducing their own risk of stroke by stopping smoking, exercising regularly, eating a diet low in processed foods and high in vegetables, and managing existing medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

It is important to monitor changes in your blood pressure, since more than half of all strokes are associated with high blood pressure. Being overweight or obese also plays a negative role: too much weight, especially in the lower back, puts additional stress on the heart and other organs and increases the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Separately, it is necessary to say regarding food. Processed foods (the so-called fast food, which today, unfortunately, is in great favor among the younger generation) contain higher levels of salt, fat and sugar, which contribute to high blood pressure and also increase the risk of obesity. A healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and low in salt can help you prevent and manage hypertension. Proper nutrition should be combined with regular physical activity – this is a good prevention of atherosclerosis.

I also focus on stress: as you know, strong negative emotions temporarily increase blood pressure. If you experience high levels of stress on a regular basis, it can damage your arteries over time, increasing your risk of stroke and other diseases. In the modern world it is impossible to live without stressful situations, but you need to learn to control yourself, be philosophical regarding the trials of fate and try to think positively.
