Preventing Respiratory Infections: Recommendations by Ministry of Public Health and Uruguayan Society of Pediatrics

He Ministry of Public Health ( MSP ), in conjunction with the Uruguayan Society of Pediatricsissued a series of recommendations to prevent a greater circulation of respiratory infections and the generation of serious pictures in people at risk, in the face of “the high circulation of viruses” that causes these infections, “typical of the time”.

Recommendations to prevent respiratory infections:

  • Avoid exposure to sick or ill people respiratory symptoms.
  • Stay as little time as possible in places with poor ventilation and a large influx of people.
  • Regularly ventilate closed spaces.
  • Wash hands with soap and water before and following eating, caring for a sick person, changing diapers, following touching objects (such as: telephones, cell phones, computers, supermarket cart) or following traveling by bus, coming home from the street, coughing or sneezing.
  • when coughing or sneezing cover nose and mouth with upper arm or elbow; with your hands only if you have a tissue.
  • wear mask if you have respiratory symptoms or meet people who have them.
  • Do not attend your usual activities (school, work) if you have respiratory symptoms and follow the medical recommendations regarding the necessary care. In case it is imperative to interact with other people, wear a mask.
  • Keep vaccinations up to date.
  • Follow current recommendations regarding the vaccination once morest flu and covid-19.
  • Avoid sending children who have respiratory symptoms or fever to educational, maternal, and sports centers. This allows decrease the circulation of viruses and prevent other children from catching it.
  • In the presence of respiratory symptoms, consult with your provider and do not go to usual activities (school, work) following medical recommendations regarding care and recovery time at home.

In the face of these signs and symptoms, it is recommended to go to the doctor:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Breathing faster and more frequently than normal.
  • Noises when breathing
  • Bad general appearance that does not improve.
  • Color changes in the skin (paleness, purple color or marble appearance).
  • Rejection of food: does not want to eat or vomits everything.
  • High fever, especially with dogs or feeling very cold.
  • Respiratory symptoms in infants under three months.
  • Rib retraction (the ribs sink in or on the sternum).
  • Confusion, disorientation or significant decay (does not wake up easily, does not play).
