Preventing Respiratory Infections During the Holiday Season: Recommendations from the National Institute of Health

2023-12-06 23:07:00

At the beginning of the holiday season, an increase in cases of respiratory diseases has been observed.

In this regard, the National Institute of Health (INS) has urged Colombians to maintain protective measures and prepare for the last respiratory peak of the year.

According to the INS, normally in the last quarter there is an increase in cases related to respiratory infections in the country, reaching a significant peak in December.

Precisely, in the last weeks of October and the first of November, the INS registered 36 percent of infections due to respiratory infection in children under five years of age. According to the Institute, it was mainly due to the respiratory syncytial virus.

The Institute assures that this is due to greater social interaction during these months and temperature changes caused by climatic phenomena.

Faced with this peak, the groups that may be most vulnerable are pregnant women, children under 5 years of age, adults over 60 years of age and people with medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer or kidney disease.

Additionally, at this time the flow of travelers arriving on vacation from the northern hemisphere increases, where there is a high circulation of COVID-19 and influenza.

Therefore, it is recommended:

1. Strengthen protection and self-care measures, since crowds and family gatherings are typical during this time.

2. Keep flu and covid-19 vaccines up to date.

(See: Some sectors described the approval of the health reform as a ‘serious error’).

3. Use of face masks in places with a large influx of people.

4. Wash your hands frequently.

Keep in mind that if at any time the ‘flu’ causes you difficulty breathing, you should see a doctor immediately.
