Preventing Photosensitization: Understanding the Drugs and Protective Measures

2023-08-29 17:00:00

Photosensitization is characterized by acute inflammatory reactions. They are due to the combination of sun exposure and the use of a drug containing a substance sensitizing to these natural or artificial radiations.

These reactions appear from the first exposure, and most often result in sunburn-like redness, sometimes associated with bubbles (large blisters) or itching. They are strictly localized to regions exposed to the sun.

What drugs?

These can be products taken by mouth (certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, antidepressants, medicines for heart rhythm disorders or sedatives) or medicines applied to the skin (acne treatments, topical antiseptics, antifungal treatments or antiallergic creams).

Photosensitizing drugs have a distinctive symbol (a red triangle containing a sun and a cloud) on their box in order to identify them easily and thus take appropriate preventive measures.

How to react ?

To guard once morest any inconvenience, there are actually two options: either stopping the drug(s) in question. But if this is not possible, it is the sun that must be avoided. Protective measures (systematic shade, use of sunscreen with high protection factors, etc.) are essential.
