Preventing Over-exercising: Understanding the Risks and Finding Balance

Regular physical exercise is crucial to staying healthy. In addition to keeping the body in shape and achieving an ideal weight, physical activity helps combat stress and depression. However, overdoing it can also be harmful.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, Medline Plus, rest is an important part of training, as it allows your body to recover for your next exercise session. When a person does not get enough rest, this can lead to poor performance and, most complexly, to facing health problems.

Experts recommend moderate exercise most days of the week, but if you find that you are frequently tired or that your performance is affected, it may be time to relax a bit and validate how hard you are pushing your body.

Some signs that you are over-exercising include, for example, being unable to perform at the same level, needing longer rest periods, feeling tired, having mood swings, having trouble sleeping, feeling sore muscles or heaviness in limbs, suffer from overuse injuries, lose motivation, get more colds, lose weight and feel anxious.

With excessive exercise, the risks of injury can be greatly increased. Tiredness and mental fatigue can cause people not to perform the exercises correctly, putting some parts of their body at risk. A poorly done exercise, with an incorrect technique, can injure.
