Preventing Myopia in Children: Tips and Strategies for Healthy Vision

25% of children aged 6 to 9 are affected by myopia. And this visual defect continues to gain ground. So much so that it is estimated that half of the world’s population will be affected by 2050.

If myopia is frequently of hereditary origin, various external elements can contribute to its occurrence. It is notably due to an eye that is too long, or a distance between the cornea and the retina that is too great.

1) Limit screens

The time spent playing online games, consulting social networks or texting is not without impact on eyesight. These activities that require near vision can in fact cause what is called “behavioral” myopia. Note also that the harmful effect of screens is all the more reinforced when the lighting in the room is insufficient.

And of course, it is important not to put a child in front of a screen before the age of 3. Those exposed before this age are more likely to develop myopia even before entering school.

2) Take regular breaks

For teenagers studying or adults working on a computer all day, it is important to take breaks. Get into the habit of relaxing your eyes every twenty minutes by moving your gaze away from the screen.

3) Take advantage of outdoor light

Natural light is important in preventing myopia. The eyes need rest. Playing more outdoors might reduce the risk of children developing myopia.

A study carried out in China confirms the importance of outdoor activities. The light would stimulate the production of neurotransmitters which control the growth of the eye.
