Preventing Mold-Related Tragedies: A Father’s Plea for Action

A father who lost his 2-year-old son to mold in his home, regarding which he had been complaining to his landlord for years, took the floor to implore other parents to leave “without wasting time”.

“I cannot stress enough that tenants who find themselves in similar situations should not waste time. Please, please, please… make sure you knock on the right doors,” begged Faisal Abdullah, 31, in an interview with “The Guardian” on Thursday.

Three years following the death of little Awaab Ishak, resulting from untreated mold in the small family’s social housing in Rochdale, the thirty-year-old decided to return for the first time to the death which shook the United Kingdom, in order to prevent other parents before it’s too late.

“Even if it means leaving the home, please do it, because if you have children and it takes longer to find a cure, it will be to the detriment of the health of the children or of you as an adult,” he continued to the British newspaper.

The 2-year-old boy died in December 2020 from a “serious respiratory illness due to prolonged exposure to mold in his home”, following his father complained regarding the situation to his Rochdale social housing landlord. Boroughwide Housing (RBH) since 2017.

“Landlords should seriously inspect the property and be very serious and quick in resolving problems rather than letting things fester and things happening like what happened to my son,” he said. added to “The Guardian”.

He also called on the UK government to impose strict deadlines on landlords to tackle mold in the private rented sector as well as social housing.
