“Preventing Long Covid: The Role of Vitamin D and Other Factors to Consider”

The long Covid is a phenomenon that affects around 50 to 70% of patients hospitalized for Covid-19. Symptoms can persist well beyond twelve weeks following initial infection with SARS-CoV-2. Some of the most common symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, muscle and joint pain, as well as respiratory and neurological problems. The precise mechanisms of this disease are not yet fully understood.

Lower vitamin D levels in long Covid cases

According to a study presented at the 25th European Congress of Endocrinology in Istanbul, long Covid might be linked to a lack of vitamin D. The researchers examined the cases of 100 patients aged 51 to 70, with and without long Covid. The vitamin D level was measured at the time of their admission to the hospital and six months following their discharge. The results showed that patients with long Covid had lower levels of vitamin D compared to those without it. This difference was even more marked in patients who had symptoms of ‘brain fog’, such as confusion, forgetfulness and poor concentration, at the six-month follow-up.

Vitamin D in prevention of Covid long

These results suggest that vitamin D levels should be assessed in patients with Covid-19 following discharge from hospital. Additionally, the role of vitamin D supplementation in preventing long Covid should be investigated in randomized controlled trials. Previous studies have shown that vitamin D can boost the immune system and reduce the risk of respiratory diseases. Therefore, it is possible that vitamin D also plays a role in the prevention of long Covid.

Long Covid: vitamin D is not the only variable to take into account

However, this study has its limitations. She cannot establish a direct causal link between long Covid and vitamin D, because patients who developed long Covid may also have had lower vitamin D levels before their infection. Also, the study only looked at a group of patients between the ages of 51 and 70, so it’s possible that the results might differ in other age groups or populations. Finally, vitamin D is not the only variable to take into account, there are other factors that may contribute to the development of long Covid.
