Preventing Local Dengue Outbreaks: Measures and Awareness in Gard

2023-09-19 12:34:27

Two cases of transmission of the dengue virus in people who have not recently traveled to tropical areas have been reported to the Regional Health Agency in Gard. The sick people have been taken care of and their state of health does not cause concern. Faced with these autochthonous cases of dengue and to avoid the spread of the virus locally, preventive actions are deployed in busy places and suspected places of contamination in Rochefort du Gard and Gagnières.

Dengue fever, specifies the ARS, is a generally benign illness whose symptoms, similar to those of the flu (high fever, joint pain, severe headache), can be temporarily disabling. It is transmitted through the bite of a tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) previously infected with the virus from a person during their illness. A case is said “native” when a person contracts the disease without having traveled to an area where the virus circulates in the 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms.

Measures in place

A targeted mosquito control action to eliminate larval breeding grounds and adult mosquitoes in places of residence and passage of sick people. The local residents concerned are informed in advance. An active search for cases in the neighborhood, in order to identify possible other sick people and the imported case at the origin of the transmission. Raising awareness among health professionals in the sector regarding reporting new cases.
