Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke: A Cardiologist’s Guide to Recognizing Atrial Fibrillation

2023-12-04 16:57:18

A Tver cardiologist spoke regarding an insidious harbinger of heart attack and stroke.

Serious illnesses can occur even in an apparently healthy person. However, in the first stages they can occur completely without symptoms.

One of these insidious and quite common diseases in the Tver region is atrial fibrillation, better known as atrial fibrillation. Instead of contractions, chaotic “flickering” occurs in the atrium; the ventricles contract in an irregular rhythm, usually at a high frequency.

Against the background of atrial fibrillation, the risk of blood clots increases, and, as a result, the occurrence of strokes and heart attacks.

The insidiousness of the disease lies in the fact that a certain part of people do not feel such arrhythmia or simply do not pay attention to it.

– There is only one way out – electrocardiography (ECG). Nothing else has been invented for such patients. And the most preferable registration of rhythm disturbances is a 12-channel ECG, which allows you to determine even small changes in the work of the heart,

– said cardiologist Ekaterina Timofeeva, deputy chief physician of the Tver Regional Cardiology Clinic and chief specialist of the regional Ministry of Health.

According to a cardiologist, you can monitor your heart rate at home. In particular, by measuring the pulse on the wrist with one or better three fingers. True, there are no clear criteria for the norm. Some experts consider the normal pulse to be from 60 to 80 beats/m, others – from 55 to 90 beats/m. In fact, the norm is individual for each person and may depend on age, level of physical fitness, emotional state and lifestyle. But any change in the usual rhythm is already a reason to be wary.

Naturally, science and technology do not stand still, adds Ekaterina Timofeeva. – Blood pressure monitors with arrhythmia recognition functions have been available for a long time. For home use, we recommend automatic devices that pump air themselves, measure pressure themselves, and record arrhythmia. But you should not completely trust tonometers. For example, the arrhythmia indicator may not light up because the measurement was taken exactly during the interval when the heart was beating more or less rhythmically. Therefore, it is necessary to repeat the measurement following a few minutes, observe yourself for several hours, and if the situation repeats, then you should consult a doctor. In any case, only a cardiologist can make an accurate diagnosis following taking an ECG. Therefore, we strongly urge all people over 40 years of age to undergo medical examination, which includes electrocardiography.

As part of the clinical examination, an electrocardiogram can be taken free of charge at any time and no special preparation is required for this.

We strongly encourage all people over 40 years of age to undergo medical examination, which includes electrocardiography.

We would like to add that the risk group for developing atrial fibrillation includes older people, patients with organic heart disease and chronic diseases such as thyroid pathologies, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and others, as well as those with excess weight, neurological disorders, alcohol abuse and smoking.

As you can see, many of these factors depend on lifestyle. Therefore, when implementing the regional program “Combating Cardiovascular Diseases” within the framework of the national project “Health”, special attention is paid to such an area as prevention. For example, studies show that the risk of developing atrial fibrillation decreases with a decrease in weight of even 10%.
