Preventing Gastroenteritis During Hot Weather: Tips and Advice from Public Health Experts

Many cases of gastroenteritis have been recorded in recent weeks. This situation is not expected to improve given the strong heat and intermittent showers at the moment.

The number of cases of gastroenteritis is increasing. From 680 during the week of December 4 to 10, the number increased to 731 the following week, from December 11 to 17, according to figures from the Ministry of Health. This trend is expected to persist with the current high heat, and if no precautions are taken in the storage and consumption of certain foods.
“We need to be very careful regarding the meals we eat now.

They should be freshly prepared and not left at room temperature for more than two hours following cooking, as they can be spoiled,” emphasizes Dr. Fazil Khodabocus, public health physician. He recommends boiling tap water before consuming it. Hand hygiene is also important, he adds. “We have already noted an increase in gastroenteritis, and the number may increase in the coming days due to weather conditions,” he said.

During this period of festivities, he advises paying attention to cooking food. Meats must, for example, be well cooked, especially when grilling, because bacteria can proliferate quickly and thus cause gastroenteritis, he emphasizes.

In the event of symptoms of gastroenteritis (diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps), it is recommended to consult a doctor and make sure to consume enough water to avoid dehydration, by having rehydration serums on hand. “Gastroenteritis should not be trivialized in order to avoid possible complications,” he concludes.
