As the end-of-year holidays approach, the Walloon Road Safety Agency (AWSR) is launching an awareness campaign once morest drunk driving, it announced Wednesday in a press release. In addition to posters placed along the roads, a radio advertisement and publications on social networks will be widely distributed until mid-January in Wallonia.
“On the roads, this period is particularly conducive to accidents linked to drunk driving,” it is recalled in the press release. “December is in fact the month of the year when there are proportionally the most. During the end-of-year holidays, the number of accidents involving an alcoholic driver even doubles.”
Challenging results
According to a survey carried out among 1,000 Walloons in 2023 by the AWSR, eight out of ten people cannot choose between drinking or driving. In addition, one in three people surveyed say they feel able to get behind the wheel while being “a little drunk”. “A feeling probably heightened tenfold during an evening, under the effects of alcohol.”
The AWSR survey also reveals that 12% of Walloons indicate that they do not limit their consumption when they get back behind the wheel following a family celebration or a meal at a restaurant. For comparison, 8% of drivers say they do not pay attention to the quantities of alcohol consumed during a nightclub outing.
Good resolution
“The major awareness campaign offers the right resolution, the one to keep, not only all evening, but also throughout the year, the one that can save lives. You should never drink alcohol before driving.”
In total, 20,000 single-use breathalyzers will be distributed at several Christmas markets on December 9 and 16, “to allow people who have not managed to keep their resolution to drink 0%, to test themselves anywhere and at any time ”.
